Dental Glossary — Key Terms Explained

Plain-English explanations of the dental terms you'll encounter when researching treatment in Turkey. 20 terms across 5 categories.

Implant Terms

Osseointegration
The biological process by which a dental implant fuses with the surrounding jawbone over 3–6 months, creating a stable, permanent anchor for a crown or bridge.
CBCT Scan
Cone Beam Computed Tomography — a 3D X-ray that maps bone density and nerve positions in precise detail, used for implant treatment planning.
Immediate Load Implant
An implant technique where a temporary crown or bridge is attached to the implant on the same day as surgery, allowing the patient to leave with functional teeth immediately.
Abutment
The connector piece that attaches to the top of a dental implant and supports the crown or bridge above the gumline.
Nobel Biocare
A Swiss/US dental implant manufacturer considered the global gold standard for implant systems, used at Bergedent for all premium implant cases.

Restoration Terms

E.max
A lithium disilicate glass-ceramic material by Ivoclar Vivadent, used for ultra-thin veneers (from 0.3mm) and crowns. Known for strength, translucency, and natural appearance.
Zirconia
A high-strength ceramic material used for crowns, bridges, and implant restorations. Highly durable (1,000+ MPa), tooth-coloured, and metal-free.
Veneer
A thin layer of porcelain or composite bonded to the front surface of a tooth to improve its colour, shape, or alignment.
Crown
A full-coverage restoration that caps an entire tooth, used when a tooth is heavily decayed, cracked, or following root canal treatment.
Hollywood Smile
A complete smile transformation using porcelain veneers or crowns across the visible front teeth, designed to create a uniform, bright, aesthetically ideal smile.

Treatment Types

All-on-4
A full-arch restoration technique using 4 dental implants (2 vertical + 2 angled at 45°) to support a fixed bridge replacing all teeth in one jaw. Suitable for patients with limited bone volume.
All-on-6
A full-arch restoration using 6 vertical implants for a full jaw of fixed teeth. Offers greater load distribution than All-on-4 and is preferred when bone volume allows.
Smile Design
A digital planning process where photographs, facial measurements, and software are used to design the ideal tooth shape, size, and proportion for a patient's face before any treatment begins.
Bone Graft
A surgical procedure to add bone material (from the patient, a donor, or synthetic source) to an area of the jaw with insufficient bone volume, enabling future implant placement.
Sinus Lift
A bone grafting procedure performed in the upper jaw when the sinus cavity is too close to the jawbone, creating space for implant placement.

Accreditation & Standards

TEMOS
Temos International Healthcare Accreditation — the leading accreditation body for international patient care in medical tourism. TEMOS certification indicates a clinic meets rigorous quality and safety standards for treating overseas patients.
CE Mark
A certification that dental materials (implants, ceramics, instruments) meet EU safety and quality standards. All materials used at Bergedent carry CE certification.

Procedures

Digital Mock-Up
A temporary demonstration of your planned new smile (using composite material or printed resin) placed over your existing teeth before treatment begins, so you can preview and approve the result.
Root Canal
A procedure to remove infected or inflamed pulp from inside a tooth, clean the root canals, and seal the tooth. Allows retention of a natural tooth that would otherwise require extraction.
Gum Contouring
Reshaping the gumline with a soft-tissue laser to create a more symmetrical smile, often combined with veneer treatment.
